(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Support for Germany’s head of government has increased significantly this month, according to a poll by Infratest-Dimap. 75 per cent of respondents are satisfied with the performance of Angela Merkel, up six points since June.

Official results from the September 2005 election to the Federal Diet gave Merkel’s Christian-Democratic Union (CDU) and the Bavarian Christian-Social Party (CSU) 226 seats, with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) a close second with 222 legislators. Neither of the two main parties was able to assemble a coalition government with their preferred partners. In November 2005, Merkel was sworn in as Germany’s first female head of government. The current administration includes members of the CDU, CSU and SPD.

Support is markedly lower for SPD leader Kurt Beck. Only 35 per cent of respondents are satisfied with his performance, down two points in a month.

Germany’s top security official and interior minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said earlier this month that the European country should consider detaining potential terrorists and sanctioning the killing of terrorist leaders abroad as a way to prevent Germany from being attacked by extremists. Merkel later referred to the minister without specifically responding to his proposals, and said in a televised interview: “We have threats that we didn’t even know 10 years ago. I want an interior minister who will grapple with these new threats.”
