In a survey by Ipsos released by Le Point, 61 per cent of respondents have a favourable opinion of French president Nicolas Sarkozy, and 54 per cent feel the same way about French prime minister Fran§ois Fillon.

In a survey by LH2 published in Libération, 63 per cent of respondents have a positive opinion of Sarkozy, and 57 per cent feel the same way about Fillon.

In May, Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) candidate and former interior minister Sarkozy won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed Fillon—who had been his adviser and presidential campaign leader—as prime minister.

Following the election to the National Assembly on Jun. 10 and 17, Sarkozy ordered a cabinet reshuffle. Christine Lagarde, the former head of an American bank, became the first woman to be appointed as finance minister in France. Jean-Louis Borloo took over as environment and energy minister, and will be the de-facto deputy prime minister. Borloo replaced Alain Juppé, who was forced to resign after he failed to win his seat in the legislative ballot.

On Jun. 29, Fillon promised an “in-depth review” of France’s fiscal system in order to foster employment, saying, “No major tax will be overlooked: we will examine social charges, the supplementary income tax (CSG), wage taxes but also the value added tax (VAT), income tax and corporate tax.”
