The governing centre-right alliance of the Moderate Rally Party (M), the Centre Party (C), the People’s Party Liberals (FpL), and the Christian-Democrats (KD) is second with 42.3 per cent, up 1.4 points in a month.

Swedish voters renewed the Diet in September 2006. The centre-right alliance secured 178 seats, ending the ten-year tenure of Social-Democrat prime minister Goran Persson. Moderate leader Fredrik Reinfeldt became prime minister in October. In January 2007, former sustainable development minister Mona Sahlin took over as the new leader of the Social-Democrats.

On Jun. 28, Swedish deputy prime minister Maud Olofsson and United States assistant secretary for energy efficiency and renewable energy Alexander Karsner, signed a bilateral Implementing Arrangement on Renewable Energy Cooperation. The two delegates will work on a semi-public environmental programme seeking to reduce fossil fuel consumption that will be partly financed by the Volvo Group and the governments of Sweden and the United States. Michael Wood, the U.S. ambassador to Sweden, told reporters: “The agreement will make it easier for the U.S. and Sweden to identify and fund potential breakthroughs in alternative energy technology.”
