(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Most people in France are satisfied with their new national administration, according to a poll by CSA published in Le Parisien. 52 per cent of respondents think positively of the administration headed by prime minister Fran§ois Fillon.

Last month, Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) candidate and former interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy won the presidential run-off with 53.06 per cent of the vote. Sarkozy appointed Fillon as prime minister. Fillon had been Sarkozy’s adviser in the UMP for over two years, and was also his presidential campaign leader.

Following the election to the National Assembly on Jun. 10 and 17, Sarkozy ordered a cabinet reshuffle. Christine Lagarde, the former head of an American bank, became the first woman to be appointed as finance minister in France. Jean-Louis Borloo took over as environment and energy minister, and will be the de-facto deputy prime minister. Borloo replaced Alain Juppé, who was forced to resign after he failed to win his seat in the legislative ballot.

In January 2004, Juppé—a former prime minister—was convicted on charges stemming from an alleged scheme to use funds from private companies and the Paris city hall, to pay for the salaries of people working for the Rally for the Republic (RPR) party during the tenure of former president Jacques Chirac as mayor of Paris.

Following the Jun. 17 run-off, in which the UMP and its allies secured a majority with 345 seats in the National Assembly, Fillon said the vote “validates our plan to modernize France,” adding, “We will renovate our country, experiment with new ideas, enhance work and merit, encourage talent, and innovation and get rid of the defeatism that has suffocated the republic.”
