Americans Still Peeved Over Iraq War

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Many adults in the United States question their country’s involvement in the coalition effort, according to a poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. 57 per cent of respondents think going to war with Iraq was the wrong thing for the United States to do, up two points since May.

The coalition effort against Saddam Hussein’s regime was launched in March 2003. At least 3,503 American soldiers have died during the military operation, and more than 25,800 troops have been wounded in action.

In December 2005, Iraqi voters renewed their National Assembly. In May 2006, Shiite United Iraqi Alliance member Nouri al-Maliki officially took over as prime minister.

On May 24, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 280-142 on the Iraq supplemental spending bill, which approves $100 billion U.S. for the military missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Senate ratified the measure in an 80-14 vote.

Yesterday, U.S. president George W. Bush discussed the current state of affairs in Iraq, saying, “America will continue to stand behind the Iraqi people as they fight these extremists and terrorists, people who want to destroy both our countries. With our help, we expect the Iraqi government to pass laws that help the people of that troubled land reconcile their differences so that the people who voted for democracy can raise their families in a secure environment. We all have obligations to make sure that this young democracy survives.” 54 per cent of respondents support Congress setting a timetable for withdrawing all U.S. troops from Iraq.
