Slovaks Support Abortion Amendment

(CPOD) Jul. 23, 2003 – A controversial abortion amendment is endorsed by a majority of Slovak residents, according to a poll by MVK published in Narodna Obroda. 69 per cent of respondents support the new legislation.

(CPOD) Jul. 23, 2003 – A controversial abortion amendment is endorsed by a majority of Slovak residents, according to a poll by MVK published in Narodna Obroda. 69 per cent of respondents support the new legislation.

The proposal would make it possible to terminate pregnancies until the 24th week of gestation, provided an embryo is genetically damaged. Abortion is legal in Slovakia only before the 12th week of gestation.

Slovak president Rudolf Schuster decided to veto the amendment today, and sent the bill back to the National Council for further consideration.
