(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Dominican president Leonel Fernández could garner enough support to earn a new term in office next year, according to a poll by Noxa-Cies published in Clave. 42 per cent of respondents would vote for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) member in the next ballot.

Miguel Vargas Maldonado of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) is second with 30 per cent, followed by Amable Aristy Castro of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) with 17 per cent.

In the May 2004 presidential election, Fernández received 57.11 per cent of the vote, defeating incumbent Hipólito Mejía of the PRD and Eduardo Estrella of the PRSC. Fernández had previously served as the Dominican Republic’s head of state from 1996 to 2000.

On Oct. 27, Radhamés Segura, administrator of the Dominican Corporation of State Electricity Companies (CDEEE), told citizens to trust Fernández’s ability to handle future energy challenges, saying, "You can trust that president Leonel Fernández, during this 2004-2008 term and the 2008-2012 period, will have completely resolved the Dominican Republic’s electricity problems"

The next presidential election is scheduled for May 16, 2008.
