(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – The vast majority of people in Montenegro would be happy to join the European Union (EU), according to a poll by Cedem. 78.2 per cent of respondents support their country’s accession into the continental group, unchanged since last June.

When asked about joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), 43.1 per cent of respondents voice opposition, while 33.1 per cent support the idea.

The remnants of the Yugoslav Federation were transformed into Serbia and Montenegro in February 2003. In May 2006, Montenegro voted to establish "an independent state with full international and legal subjectivity" in a referendum. In June, the Assembly of the Republic issued its formal Declaration of Independence.

In 2007, Montenegro signed a pre-candidacy agreement with the EU. Slovenia—also a former component of Yugoslavia—joined the EU in 2004.

On Apr. 6, Montenegro held its first presidential election since independence. Incumbent Filip Vujanovic of the Democratic Party of Montenegrin Socialists (DPSCG) was re-elected with 51.9 per cent of all cast ballots.

On Apr. 8, the EU congratulated Vujanovic for winning what it called "free and fair elections". The Montenegrin president replied by reiterating his commitment to enter the EU, saying, "We will work together for our European future. (…) Montenegro belongs to the European Union, and we’ll join it." Vujanovic also supports Montenegro’s accession into NATO.
