The Netherlands has been an independent monarchy since March 1815. The country has been governed by members of the House of Orange-Nassau ever since. Queen Beatrix has been on the throne since April 1980.

The Netherlands is a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarch as its head of state. Queen Beatrix performs in a mostly ceremonial role but is vested with real powers by the constitution if government ministers choose to defer to her.

In December 2007, during her annual Christmas speech, Queen Beatrix urged Dutch citizens to be more tolerant, saying, "Our democratic tradition comprises more than only the acceptance of the power of the majority; it is also about respect for minorities."

Geert Wilders—leader of the anti-immigration Party for Freedom (PVV)—called for reducing the monarchy to a purely ceremonial role and banning members of the royal family from interfering in politics. Wilders said that he and his party were offended by the Queen’s speech, which he described as "stuffed full of multi-cultural nonsense" largely directed at his party.

Last month, Democrats 66 (D66) lawmaker Boris van der Ham discussed his views on the issue, saying, "I think that the monarchy in our current democracy has an important place as a symbol of the Netherlands, but I think that that symbol could be stronger if it were less political."
