(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – One-in-four adults around the world are worried about their employment situation, according to the Voice of the People survey released by Gallup International. 63 per cent of respondents think their job is safe, while 27 per cent believe there is a chance they may become unemployed.

The survey shows that at least 46 per cent of respondents in Serbia, Kosovo, Cameroon, Peru and the Czech Republic think there is a chance they may become unemployed.

Conversely, at least four-in-five respondents in Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Austria and Denmark feel good about their job safety.

Since 2007, defaults on so-called subprime mortgages—credit given to high-risk borrowers—in the United States caused volatility in domestic and global financial markets and ultimately pushed the U.S. economy into a recession. A recession is defined as two consecutive quarters of negative growth. The crisis has affected the global financial and credit systems, and triggered layoffs in companies around the world.

On Jan. 22, software giant Microsoft announced it would cut 5,000 jobs worldwide over the coming 18 months. In a statement, the company said: "These initiatives will reduce the company’s annual operating expense run rate by approximately $1.5 billion [U.S.] and reduce fiscal year 2009 capital expenditures by $700 million."
