Fomer European member of parliament Antonis Samaras is a very close second with 34 per cent, followed by former health minister Dimitris Avramopoulos with 16.8 per cent, and Thessaloniki prefect Panagiotis Psomiadis with 9.8 per cent.

Greece held a legislative election on Oct. 4. Final results gave the Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) 43.92 per cent of the vote and 160 seats in parliament. The conservative ND—which had been in power since 2004—garnered 33.48 per cent of all cast ballots and secured 91 seats in the legislature. The Communist Party of Greece (KKE), the People’s Orthodox Alarm (LAOS), and the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYR) also won parliamentary seats.

Georges Papandreou—whose father and grandfather served as prime ministers—was sworn in as the new head of government on Oct. 6.

Outgoing prime minister Kostas Karamanlis accepted defeat, and tendered his resignation as leader of the ND.

ND members will elect a new leader at a party conference on Nov. 7. Bakoyannis, the frontrunner to succeed Karamanlis, is a former mayor of Athens and former minister of foreign affairs. She has been the only female mayor of Greece’s capital city. Greece has never had a female prime minister.

On Oct. 15, Bakoyannis said that she wants the ND to become an "open and inclusive party," adding, "I am ready to stand on the front line in the struggle to rebuild New Democracy."
